Some may have lost the battle, but we pray the war is far from over

On the way- side fell many veteran politicians, the likes of David Mwenje who lost the PNU nominations to little known Simon Mbugua, who have been in Parliament since time immemorial. Nyanza only spared 5 out of the 21 immediate former MPs.

In the recent nomination exercise, women also had their share of losing with Prof. Wangari Maathai losing the wangari maathainominations to F. T. Nyammo. We felt a deep sense of loss when it was announced that the Nobel Laureate had failed to clinch a PNU nomination in an area where party affiliation can easily determine a candidate’s victory or loss.

In a letter written to the PNU elections Board Maathai complained of irregularities, handouts and torn ballot papers which she sighted as the reason why she failed to secure the PNU nominations for the Tetu seat.

The PNU elections board however allowed Prof. Maathai to seek nomination on her Mazingira Green Party on the 27th of December.

Other nomination casualties included alicen chelaiteAlicen Chelaite who is the assistant minister for Gender as well as Christine Mango whose fall-back plans are still unclear.

Ancestral origins were cited as the reason for Christine Mango’s downfall. It was predicted that though the ODM aspirant was in the correct political party her chances for nomination christine mangowere thwarted by the fact that she was born in Budalangi and married in Marachi where she was seeking nominations on an ODM ticket.

Others who suffered the same plight were Alice Muthoni Wahome who chose the SAFINA party as her election vehicle.

According to a poll conducted by the International Republic Institute (IRI) in April this year, 63.6% of Kenyans thought their MPs did not deserve to be re-elected citing reasons such as non-performance, unreliability, unavailability and inapproachability, corruption, selfishness and change in leadership.

If indeed these are reasons that they did not do well in the nominations, we hope that if our female aspirants seek nomination in smaller parties, they will seek to allay fears in the electorate regarding these issues in order to sustain and increase the numbers of women in the 10th Parliament. hellen sambili

Also losing by just a whisker was Helen Sambili who lost to the immediate former MP Joseph Korir on an ODM ticket who garnered 5,623 votes. When we called Hellen Sambili, she reported that the results did not include those from the 3 poling stations where she is very popular. Though she has sent an appeal to the ODM secretariat she has received no response so far and will be seeking nominations on a UDM (United Democrats Congress) party ticket.
