Western

Propelled by various inspirations, including role models, women in Western Province have plunged into elective politics in larger numbers than ever before. Some of them are accomplished professionals in various disciplines, others are businesspersons or wives of former politicians while the rest are adept women politicians who are incumbent lawmakers through nomination or competitive elections and who want to defend their turfs or test their political mettle.

In Budalangi MP Raphael Wanjala faces Ms Cynthia Kwedho in fighting for a possible 23,318 registered voters. Ms Cynthia Kwedho does business mainly in Budalangi and has popularised herself through human rights and women group activities in Busia district. She will be fighting a male-dominated field and has to work extra hard.

Prof Christine Mango defends her seat in Butula constituency.

Butere constituency, made famous during the tenure of “the people’s watchman” Martin Shikuku, once again comes into focus in a battlefield that has attracted nominated MP Ruth Oniang’o of New Ford Kenya and Ms Elizabeth Efiketi.

The big battle in Funyula constituency will be Vice-President Moody Awori facing the biggest challenge in his 25-year political career to retain the seat against ODM-K running mate Dr Julia Ojiambo.

Khwisero constituency could have one of the most interesting contests in the country, as councillor Ann Kataka of Kisa Central ward battles with scholars who have abandoned lecture halls to campaign all in an effort to unseat the incumbent, Mr Julius Arunga.

Kimilili constituency has attracted one of the biggest number of aspirants among them Dr Reginalda Wanyonyi of Moi University.

The battle lines for Matungu are being drawn and the contest could be tough as assistant minister for Information, Mr David Were, defends the seat against Ms Auxillia Nyamoma who is so far the only woman in the race.
