Welcome to USAWA

During the 2002 General Election, women were caught flat-footed and this impacted negatively on the number that got elected into Parliament. Out of 133 women who vied for parliamentary seats in 2002, only 44 were nominated and only nine won elections.

"Women believed in fair play and naively sought to contest party nominations by playing by the rules. They saw male candidates show up with certificates for nominations as party candidates even where the results of elective process were incomplete and undetermined," says Amollo.
Party nominations present an exceptional hurdle for women. Yes! Parties have their owners and unfortunately more than 90% of them are not women.

USAWA special report on nominations will delve deep into the nomination process, what happened 5 five years ago at a time like this? What is likely to happen now with the major parties blotted with aspirants recording highs of over 3000? What strategies can we put in place to ensure that the aspirants we’ve come to know and admire bring forth the change that we deserve? [More]

GGP; A Household Name

ggp logoThe Gender and Governance Programme is very well spread and known. It has created a lot interest around women’s leadership and participation.

Speaking to ACWICT team, Fred Ochieng who is the Monitoring & Evaluation Specialist for the Gender & Governance Programme reported that though change does not come in a day, The Gender Governance Programme has established that men are changing their views and even campaigning for women in the majority of the constituencies.

"In Turkana South," he said, "Beatrice Askul has mobilized old well-respected men in the community to go around asking for votes on her behalf. This in a remote and patriarchal community is evidence that women’s leadership is not a piped dream.." [More]

Women aspirants once again reign in Polls

The 10th Parliament could have more women elected to the House than happened in 2002. A recent survey conducted by Infotrack/Harris and CMD-Kenya in 76 constituencies across the country revealed that nearly 60 women are among the top three candidates in their respective constituencies. Of these, 20 are rated as number one, while another 40 or so came a close second and third. Women and indeed all Kenyans will be watching to see the extent to which political parties will stay true to their pledges on gender parity in the forthcoming party nomination exercise and throughout the electioneering process.

Kudos our aspirants and best wishes

Kenyans need to take pride in the large numbers of women who have presented themselves for posts of leadership. Never in this country have we seen so many women of all ages and creeds taking up the challenge to fight it out in a largely patriarchal political arena. They are making history and the only way we can ensure that Kenya moves with the rest of the world in embracing women’s leadership is offering our support.

The Gender & Governance Programme wishes our female aspirants all the best in the coming party nominations.
