The Caucus for Women’s Leadership

List of Activities

Voter sensitization and mobilization

Through the Women’s Regional Assemblies, the Caucus has continuously held Community sensitization campaigns and Community awareness forums. This has been done by the WRA conveners, who, voluntarily continue to champion and promote women leadership at all forums at the district level.

Awareness raising for women leadership

In February 2007, the Caucus brought together over 100 women aspirants from Eastern Province including key leaders from various political parties to a Planning meeting to strategize on election victory for women aspirants. The meeting culminated in the Machakos Declaration and a peaceful march on the streets of Machakos town, to raise awareness for women’s leadership.

Through the Machakos declaration, women resolved to commit themselves to the declaration as a strategy for achieving their common political objectives in the forthcoming general election. They also demanded that affirmative action be translated into law.

Training community resource persons

Within the GGP Programme, the Caucus has trained and will continue training community resource persons (mobilizers) from selected districts spread across all the 8 Provinces. These will include both men and women. During these workshops, the mobilizers will be equipped with skills to enable them identify strategies to help women candidates win elections including the various strategies of marketing the woman candidate. From July 2007, this team will be commissioned and tasked with the responsibility of marketing the woman candidate for election victory.

Training District Women Regional Assembly Leaders

The Caucus will be conducting a Capacity building workshop for the WRA Assembly Conveners to equip them with skills that will enable them serve as community mobilizers in politics & issues of development. This will enable them to continuously Partner/network with women aspirants, and the community resource persons, with a focus on local authority aspirants as well as holding community awareness forums on acceptance of women leadership.

Training civic aspirants

The Caucus will conduct intensive training workshops for civic aspirants. We believe the local authority is the best entry point for women in politics and will devote majority of our resources and time towards strengthening the leadership of the civic candidates, to enable them conduct effective and successful campaigns. All training will take place at the provincial level.

Lobbying and advocacy
The Caucus, together with other like-minded organizations have continually lobbied for increased representation of women in decision making. This led to the recognition of women as a constituency in the famous multi-sectoral review committee. We continue to lobby political parties and key legislators for affirmative action legislation.
